which is "BEST" to heat up a room? panel heating? oil filled? halogen? fan blower? electric rod?

I use to live in a flat with no central heating, an only electric plug in type heaters. our electric bill litterally went through the roof in winter time. I would never use any sort of electric / oil filled heater ever again if at all possible.

As I understand it right now, with the prices of gas and electricity, it is 3 ish times cheaper to heat using gas than electricity. However, my kitchen doesn't have a radiator in, and I am looking around for some occasional background heat for it when it gets really cold. Looked at putting in a plinth heater, but they are quite a lot more expensive for simply being a conveniently shaped fan heater. So yes, the elec heaters are more expensive to run, but everything in context....

As far as I am aware ALL electric heaters are ALL the same re economy. (unless you "store" it)

Energy cannot be created or destoyed ONLY transformed.

Electricity can be converted into light, heat or sound.

Unless your heater makes an absolutely tremendous amount of noise, or makes that much light that you have to wear a welder's mask to protect your eyes, then 99.999999999% of the electricity will generate heat.
Even if it has got a motor, the motor itself will get hot which will ultimately warm the surrounding "cooler" environment.
So ALL electric heaters are 99.999999999% efficient.

The only way to improve economy is not to have an "instant" heater but to use cheaper electricity and STORE the energy. (OR USE GAS of course)
    Known as STORAGE HEATERS.
Heat them up during the night on economy 7 electricty - about 1/5th of the cost of daytime units - and then slowly release the heat during the day.

Unfortunately you have to make the decision that you actually need the heat 12 to 24 hours before you are going to use it. Can't just turn them on and get it with these lumps of concrete, piles of bricks or bags of water !!

Regarding the "panel heating? oil filled? halogen? fan blower? electric rod? " choices - this is just the method and "speed" at which heat can "migrate" from the heater into the environment.

Heat "moves" by CONDUCTION, CONVECTION or RADIATION.
All these will CONVECT to some degree purely because hot air rises and circulates around a room.
Anything that GLOWS will RADIATE (infra red emission).

Anything with a fan is FORCED CONVECTION.

    nice post

but go to an index store and tap in
    525-439 450w panel heater was 44.99 now 14.99
    525-440 650w panel heater was 54.99 now 14.99

    both by 'winterwarm'
Automatic turbo boost 450w costs from 1p per hour to run. 650w 2p per hour. Ultra slim @ 1.7cm deep. Overheat safety cut out. Auto temp control. free standing of wall mountable.

now thats a bargain (if you actually need to buy one)
Still a good post though I like stows.

  • Sorry quoia,
Anything that GLOWS will RADIATE (infra red emission).
not wishing to be pedantic, but....radiators dont have to glow to radiate :o
They just have to be "hot" ::)
Where does black heat come from?

Agree about the gas cooker for a quick source of heat .
If you want a little storage for background heat once comfy, add a pan with water.
Gas is nealy always cheaper because it would have to be fueling an appliance with around only 30% efficiency to cost as much as electricity would for the same purpose.

    Scat :)
    Moi....? ;)
