Tips to tot up

Options
I notice along with the minimum wage increase it is now illegal for employers to use customer tips to tot up the the minimum wage.

Although i'm undecided on tipping, I thing it's about time this unscrupulous practice came to a stop. Well done to the government for finally implementing this.

I can't see it happening but as they are so intent on equality, I hope one day there will be a national minimum wage for everybody. Underpaying someone younger who does the same job is no different to underpaying women. £3.57 is disgusting in this day and age.

  • Personally i think this is a great thing!!!

I don't like to eat in places that put a service charge on the bill automatically, if they put in on as discretionary I never pay it either!!!

That said, having worked as a waiter and hence knowing how hard a job it can be (I distinctly remember be rushed off my feet for entire evenings as 5 of us did over 300 covers!!!) I appreciate good service, a pleasant and helpful attitude etc and as such will leave a tip in cash for the person who has served me.

I will not be forced into doing so by the restaurant, and if they are forcing people to do so so they don't have to pay their staff even the low minimum wages that really annoys me, and should never have been a legal thing to do in the first place!!!

I have worked in two restaurants and never heard of companies doing this before
  • Yeah - i'm all for tipping a helpful waiter/waitress if i have some spare change. I don't always tip a set 10% or 20% as some say you should, i simply do what i have spare in my purse, which usually ends up being £2 and some change. I think it's less about the amount but more being a sign of appreciation. And i always say thank you to the person who served us as we leave to show that appreciation.

If i haven't had a great service, or if the place is exceptionally expensive then i don't tip - simply because i can't afford it and have paid enough already.

The restaurants that i find are a pain are the ones who state a 10% service charge is automatically added to the bill. That gets my goat because that should be my choice to give extra for service.

Anyway i think i have gone a little off track. I am not aware of any restaurant that doesn't allow the tips as extra but factor them into pay, but then again i don't work there. I thought it was just the tips added to your C/Card payment that were treated like this - and i have always made a point of tipping in cash as i always believed it'd be shared out otherwise among all of the staff, i would rather tip the person i thought was giving a good service. Don't know if i was correct in my thinking, just my own reasoning that detered me from tipping via card.

  • I agree about the age thing - OH and I moved into a room in a shared house (hostel) when we were just 16. We both worked and were both on minimum wage which proved pretty hard to live on.

What i find more difficult to understand is why there is yet another level in wage at 21 - what makes a 21yr old any different to an 18yr old in terms of living costs? I mean in terms of you can rent a property (not just from the council/a hostel), have a car and family yet get paid less?
