As a student I used to buy 'bargain' fruit from the market as it was much cheaper but I got fed up with getting home to find half of it rotten. Shop round till you find a decent one and then stick to them.

I agree with this. When we had a large family in the house, we always got fruit by the box from the local market. Usually used the same stall and found out that some stalls only sell supermarket rejects!!!

I think they all sell supermarket rejects! How else do all the supermarket F&V look so 'europeanly perfect' when all the ones on the market still look 'dirty'. Nowt wrong with the stuff, it's undoubtably better than the SM bought stuff!

Rats you've reminded me that we've not got a good local market but when we were in Newcastle-upon-Tyne a couple of months ago we used the Grainger Market (a covered market in the centre of the city) a lot.

We bought lots of fruit. For instance bananas at 33p a kilo, apples (cox, braeburn, gala, etc) at 55p/kilo or less. Oranges were 10 or 12 for £1, satsumas (small) were 32 for £1.

Only real problem with quality was that we bought too much and after a week it started to go soft, although you do have to work out which are the best stalls.
    Nice to save.

I agree - they can vary hugely in quality. Although in defence of fruit and veg people, one who I confronted about my rotting apples pointed out that he doesn't package them in plastic and spray them with chlorine gas etc (as supermarkets do - very scary, was on Fern and Phillip not that long ago, have obsessively washed veg ever since!) so they don't last as well.
Also, if you buy what's in season it should be cheaper - asparagus ought to be a bargain at the mo.
:grin:If at first you don't succeed, then sky-diving isn't for you
