work related suicide rise - a sign of the times

Unusual article. Shocking headline and story, but further in you read this...
"The 24 suicides among the 100,000 France Telecom employees since February last year is high but less than the overall French average (17.6 suicides a year for every 100,000 people, compared to 6.8 in Britain).
The suicide rate in France Telecom is, in fact, falling. It was higher six or seven years ago but received little publicity. There were 29 suicides among France Telecom employees in 2002, 22 in 2003, 12 in 2008 and 12 so far this year."
...and wonder what was the point?
i think it's still an issue. the stats for the general population include people with severe mental illness and other issues that are quite unlikely to be present in the fully employed. a more interesting comparison would be between companies. france telecom's employee suicide rate is obviously cause for concern otherwise the people in charge wouldn't be responding to the issue.
however, this did lead me to look up countries suicide rates. the uk does pretty well in the league. lithuanian males seem to come off worst with 68 per 100 000. not sure how much we can trust the figures though as those claiming a zero suicide rate seem unconvincing (i know anecdotally that iran has suicides - especially among the young - but theology might well lead them to be classed as something else). Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
It's an urban myth. Islam doesn't sanction beastiality.
This is the translation into English of the book:

ayatollah khomeini considered many things islamic that others might disagree with. he was the first leader to recognise transexuality. he also considered sodomy okay if your wife was too heavily pregnant to have regular sex. Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -

Fair enough. I had a squizz at the book and couldn't see anything resembling the quote. Snopes don't seem to have anything either way which is unusual.0 -
I've also been having a look at the net. There's a website called "shiachat" where shia moslems have been questioning this very quotation. You can see what they have written here:
http://www.shiachat.com/forum/index.php?/topic/4867-tahrirolvasyleh/
This very much questions the validity of the quotations, therefore I'm mindful of the fact we should be cautious and not quote what could be inflammatory remarks about a religion that I for one, don't understand, without qualifying first that the source material is correct. Particularly when this is an economic forum, not a religious one. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? This very much questions the validity of the quotations. What the first part clearly means is that it is not allowed to perform sexual intercourse with your wife if she didn't complete nine years old, however all other pleasure such as touching with sexual desire, hugging, and crossing legs is not problem with it even with infant (less than two years old).
The word Radi3ah means still being breast fed usually less than two years old.Islamic Teachings on sex with animals:"The meat of horses, mules, or donkeys is not recommended. It is strictly forbidden if the animal was sodomized while alive by a man. In that case, the animal must be taken outside the city and sold."Editor's notes: I wonder if it is OK to sodomize a dead animal? What happens if the buyer brings the poor animal back into the city?"If one commits an act of sodomy with a cow, a ewe, or a camel, their urine and their excrements become impure, and even their milk may no longer be consumed. The animal must then be killed as quickly as possible and burned, and the price of it paid to its owner by him who sodomized it."Editor's note: The poor animal first is sodomized and then killed and burned. What an Islamic justice towards animals? Where are the animal
rights group?"It is forbidden to consume the excrement of animals or their nasal secretions. But if such are mixed in minute proportions into other foods their consumption is not forbidden."
"If a man (God protect him from it!) fornicates with an animal and ejaculates, ablution is necessary."

Without doubt there are nasty versions around the world where choice is not tolerated, to put it mildly!Mr Rahman was arrested about two weeks ago and under Afghanistan's Sharia legal system could have faced execution if he had refused to renounce Christianity.
More than 1,000 protesters took to the streets in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif on Monday morning.
They demanded that Mr Rahman be tried and executed.0 -

I don't disagree that there are horrible versions of religions, of government, of lack of freedom of choice all round the world and don't separate Islamic intolerance from Christian intolerance, its not right to bomb abortion clinics either. However, my point is we don't know whether it is a true translation, there is some doubt, and it could be construed as anti-Islamic if proved to be untrue. If it is the case, then it contradicts the site's guidelines.
Edited to add: just noted Gen's posting which went in while I was writing mine. I hope that it isn't another nail, but fear it might be.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Me too. I'm a big fan of the OT chat, but not this I'm afraid.
So, let talk about death and christmas parties.
Noone that we know in ork has committed suicide as a result of the recession or redundancy, or work condtions (that I know of). There was that young city lawyer who commited suidcide from pressure of work in a City firm,, can't rememebr where/who. As a result we plan to be alive for the Christmas party. We also get an invite to my dad's companies Christmas party usually (just a few extra people do, its a huge company). We are not being invited to Dad's do this year though, though his company is doing very well now, with profits up.but its seen as a sign of ''extra spending'' to invte extra people. DH's firm is not having a firm wide party, or if they have we haven't been told yet. Last two years in London, (we were invited to London before DH transfered to here) have been places that would need booking in advance, rather swanky dos, and we certainly knew by now. So we might go out with the other trainees and their partners (self funded/part funded by office) and/or DH's department might go out, but thats a bit harder to organise. My friend's (out of London) firm is also not having an office party:through necessary frugality.
