If you put new lawn down last year and its gone patchy, there must be a local enviroment problem. Like animals, under soil debri, usage or maintenance issues.
How often do you cut the lawn?
What height do you cut it at?
    Do you have animals?
What groundwork did you carry out before laying the turf?
Is the lawn for show or is it used to play on?
This should give us a better idea on what advice to give you.

    Hi,

I cut the lawn about 1 every 2 weeks, its usually about 4-6cm's when i cut it, animal are banned from the lawn, i do have a 2 year old but he doesnt go up there much maybe 1-2 hours per week. I cleared the lawn of debis befoore laying turf anf raked it over. it will hopefully be used to play on.

Do you have lots of evergreen trees in your garden or do your neighbours.

We had quite a few of these which were sapping a lot of the energy out of the lawn

Depending on what size you bald patches are try getting hold of som Canada grass seed. Just sprinke on and rake in a little, then water every day for about 2 weeks.

However if you have only just returfed I dont expect you want to be seeding up bald patches every 2 minutes

Ok, seems thatn is not the obvious stuff then.
I would recommend a lawn specialist service like GreenThumb. Check their website. They can come and take a soil sample and recommend the right treatments and remidies. I have had Greenthumb look after my lawn for 2 years now. It costs me less than £15 a quarter and its weed and trouble free.
    Worth every penny.

You could also buy a book called 'The Lawn Expert' Really good read with lots of tips on how to achieve that perfect lawn. On sale at amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0903505487/qid=1147722789/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-6811630-5051636

    Hi devonmark,

I use Evergreen Complete in early spring and it takes out the weeds and helps the grass to grow thicker and stronger. The only downside of it is that you have to mow a lot more after the lawn has been fed.

This older thread on the In My Home board might help:
