Fruit bushes

I was thinking about planting some fruit bushes in the garden (blackcurrants, whitecurrants, redcurrants) and wondered if anyone has seen any on special offer in the shops anywhere?

Wilko's prices for fruit bushes are pretty reasonable. Also think they're starting to reduce the prices on them now.

On ready to drink ribena, there is a comp to win various things with the 'runner up' prize being a blackcurrant bush cutting. DD sent off for one, it looked just like a dead stick, but we've planted it and lo and behold it's growing.

I got mine from J Parkers. http://www.jparkers.co.uk/ They were very cheap, but I think it's a bit out of season for them now. I didn't see them on the website. I think you had to order them before April. Mine seem to be doing well, the gooseberries I bought have lots of leaves and the black and red currants are starting to catch up too.

I'm sure I've seen them in places like Asda and Woolworths too.

    Woolies often have fruit bushes.

If anyone is after raspberry canes - could I suggest a variety called Autumn Bliss ? As the name suggests thay fruit later than "normal" raspberrys, but they fruit for a longer period.
Also they are much easier to manage, once they have fruited and died off you just cut them back to the ground and they re-grow and fruit on that years new growth. Most other varieties fruit on the previous years growth.

I bought black currant and red currant bushes in the 99p shop yesterday, the look remarkably healthy for 99p. Also a half price black currant from ASDA fro £1.33

I hasve bought 99p bushes for the garden before & they seem just fine.

  • We bought blackcurrant, redcurrant, raspberry and gooseberry bushes from Morrisons for about £1.99 each I think, and then 'won' 3 more blackcurrants from the Ribena promotion, although only 1 is growing so far. The Morrisons plants are doing v well though.

if you take some cuttings of your fruit bushes and stick them in the ground they should grow away no bother so you have plants for free
