    Thanks Mark, you've been a great help. It good to have a small insight now into how pensions actually work. I imagine most folk are completely blind to them though they are of vital importance.
    I shall stress to some of my younger comrades to get their funds started!

    Check redundancy terms, some offer early retirement without penalties. Mine for example allowed my pension at 50 without reduction for age. Of course it's hard to predict what these terms will be in 30 years time, but not many people have the choice to remain in their job for as long as they wish.

    Most employers only allow early retirement without reduction if this is due to ill health.
