Phillips 32" widescreen+dvd+5.1 surround +

Options
Hi all

Just been down to my local House of Frazer in Reading and bought this Tv (Philips 32PW9788) for £799.99 (original price was £1599.99)
This TV has built in DVD, 32"pure flat screen, Pixel Plus, Built in 5.1 cinema surround system with 2 x wireless rear speakers, LCD display on tv, FM radio, stand, swivel stand for tv.
Also comes with 5 years (yes thats right) warranty included in price. The best price on line I can find is £1199.99 and that does not inc the warranty.
Sales man said that there are now only 11 left throughout the UK!!!.
You can only buy instore and delivery is £25 unless you have a large vehicle to collect it as its huge and the stand is pre assembled.
Anyway I am chuffed I got this and hope I have given someone else the chance to get this great offer.

Don't know if anyone has posted before so apologise if so.

Glad to hear you got a 5 year warranty. We bought ourselves a Phillips 28in pure flatscreen 3 years ago and paid top whack of £600 for it. After less than 2 years it stopped working. Contacted Phillips who said tough 1 year standard guarantee we can´t help you.

I would never ever buy a Phillips branded product again after their appalling customer service and crap quality of the product.

At which point you should have pointed out that the Sale Of Goods Act requires that a high value item such as this should last a lot longer than 2 years, and offers you certain rights beyond the manufacturer's 1 year warranty period (although the legal obligation is with the retailer you bought the TV from and not the manufacturer).

Oh my goodness, thank you for this. I'm reading into it now and will be contacting the company which we bought the tv from.
  • Lisalou,

    Also look here:

(Directive 99/44/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 May 1999 on certain aspects of the sale of consumer goods and associated guarantees - Specifically that the RETAILER has a MINIMUM 2 year warranty liability.......regardless what they say).

Discuss with the retailer the options, indicate that the product is not fit for the purpose and that its longevity is not that expected of a consumer durable - You want: replacement, refund or repair.   If you can not get satisfaction, indicate that you will be referring the matter to local trading standards office and ask if the resultant bad publicity in the local press is worth the retailer's refusal (This, of course, if the retailer does not see things your way!)

Previous message also correct that product must be "fit for the purpose" - Your argument might be that the TV has failed in your (reasonable) expectation that it perform for a period of 5, or more, years.

This information is great, I've just written a long letter to the. One thing that complicates matters somewhat is that I now live abroad but I will not allow them to use that as an excuse. We have tv repair shops here too!
  • If 'abroad' is within the EC then it does not matter - In this case the borderless Community works to your benefit - The legislation is Europewide......even outside EC you should argue that the legislation still covers you as you bought the product whilst within EC (Nonetheless, EC legislation, in many cases, goes beyond the physical boundaries)

Directives are normally incorporated into each State's law but, if they aren't, you can still use the original Directive, iyswim.

    Good luck.
