lock for oil tank

A few of my neighbours have had their oil stolen from their oil tanks at the back of their houses. They all had padlocks on their oil tanks that were snapped.

Does anyone know of any other security other than a padlock to stop someone breaking into my oil tank?

Thanks

  • There was something in the papers this week. a device that can, using sensor determine if there is a large drop in volume of oil. not sure of price or availability.

Yep I've never locked my plastic tank either for the exact same reason, If they want it they will take it and ruin your tank too:o

If it is prevalent in your area, maybe arrange a local meeting in your area and ask everyone to be nosey and keep an eye on each others houses:confused:

As the winter come closer and oil gets dearer, this problem will get worse:o
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

The best way to lower crime in your area is neighbourhood watch as an above poster has said :)!

The oil tank watchman as proposed by poster no.2 isn't really for telling you that someone stole your oil... you'll know when there's no heat in your house and you only ordered oil two weeks ago.

The Watchman is more likely for when you get a delivery you know that the delivery driver delivered all that they said they would. It uses a sensor to detect how much is in the tank and transmits the info to a receiver you have plugged-in in the house.

The best option is to build a fence around the tank. Even a trelis with ivy all over it should do the trick or go the whole hog and get a shed put around your tank. Something that makes your oil tank just seem like a little bit more hard work than your neighbours! (sounds awful i know, but everybody should stepping up the security on their tanks)
