Estimating gross pay from net pay?

in Cutting tax
Can anyone help me please? I'm filling in my (first ever.. gulp) benefits/tax type form (working tax credit) and need to estimate my income for the tax year 08-09. I've got most of it from old payslips etc but I'm stuck one chunk of pay, final pay at the end of my employment with one company, mid-year.
last pay with company: net pay was 988.01 for a period covering approx 5 weeks.
normal calendar month: net pay was 796.34 = 973.00 gross
Can anyone help me work out what my gross pay would have been for that 5 week period? I can't find the payslip anywhere
This is the part of the application process where I give them our (my+partners) income for that year despite knowing we couldn't claim on that amount, then contact them a few weeks later to give them our *current* income which we can claim on (stupid bloody system  ), so I don't imagine it has to be accurate to the penny?

The gross pay should be shown on your P60 for 08-09, or on the P45 part 1a which you should have retained.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

if you are stuck your wages department should be able to help as well0

the P60 is no good as it shows just the amount i've received from my current employer in that period.. not the previous one. and I don't have my P45
I might have to ring up the previous employer but they (ginormous company) are very hard to speak to on the phone

there are numerous tax calculator on the internet
although they work based on the gross pay, it is quite simple to enter a guess of the gross pay and keep varying it until you get the required net pay.0 -

If you gave them P45 when you started with them it should include the figure from the previous employer - basically the figure should be total earned in the tax year...0 -

I've used the tax calculators and I never thought of doing this  Thanks! :T0 -
in any event if you are a standard rate tax payer, no pension deduction, opted inot the state second pension and no other complications
gross pay = net pay / 69% plus 540 (as 6475/12 = 540 approx.)
so if net pay is 1000 then gross is
1000/69% = 1449
plus 540 gives 1988
the 69% comes form tax at 20% and NI at 11%
so deductions are 31%
and you're left with the 69% after tax and NI0
