What Have I Done?

I just looked on that thread about making money from nothing and I posted, asking if it was spam. i was immediately thanked by the poster of the thread and then it was reported and closed. By posting have I compromised my security in some way. Im rather worried that he thanked me.

Threads like that are usually just people who have been sucked into the scam, rather than anything more sinister. The worst you might expect would be someone trying to send you a spam e-mail through the site, but then they could get any info like that through the member list anyway.

I never use my home e-mail for stuff on the internet - I've set up a free webmail address with fastmail so that if spam comes, at least it is there and not anywhere else. And now when I register with a website, I use a customised e-mail address (eg if my usual e-mail address was onlyme@fastmail.fm, I would sign up to this site as moneysavingexpert@onlyme.fastmail.fm) - then if spam came from there, I could easily block it.

    That's simply incorrect.

Threads like that are started by people who have joined the Forum specifically to make such posts. There's been a rash of them recently - posting the identical item several times in a short space of time.

But at least the thanks - shows a small touch of class (or sarcasm) ... for a fraudster.

I think the thanks was most likely sarcasm or thanks for bumping it. Nothing for you to worry about.

That's what I meant - people sign up to schemes like this and rush around frantically posting the same message on lots of message boards. But what was trying to say is that usually they aren't trying to cause trouble, they are just ordinary people who have been conned and believe that this is a way to make some easy cash. They aren't likely to be in the business of selling lists of addresses to spammers - although I would never add my address to a list like that just in case, of course - and as far as I can tell they very rarely seem to return to the board to see if there have been any replies (although this time is an exception, obviously). I used to have a 'board guide' type role on a working from home board, and this post or variations arrived every few weeks, and was regularly reported and deleted, and I never heard of any come back from it.

No apologies for being pedantic - but this is simply an attempt to persuade you to part with money, with no hope of a return. In other words it's fraud.

And by posting in this vein you run the risk of giving them a credibility, in other reader's eyes, which is wholly unwarranted.

The following is a post from earlier today by someone else on one of the threads initiated by this idiot. It says it all!
I cant believe some of you are actually try to communicate with that idiot. He wont be back under the same name, he came on here for one thing to spam the forums with that rubbish. Its been done many times and no doubt sadly these low lifes will continue to try and exploit people. The best think is ignore them and report them if they havent been reported already.

I only started this thread because I was worried about the consequences. Thought that my security was threatened in some way. I do not wish to give him credibility.
