I've been out of work since January and registered with lots of agencies, doing spelling tests, maths tests and typing tests...but have only got a temporary job in the last two weeks. The majority of the agencies never contacted me again after I registered - I guess they have so many candidates.

if you want to work for agencies you have to keep pestering them regularly. If you do not hear anything from them within a week of first registering you will never hear from them.

I've had a couple of calls out of the blue recently. Neither were suitable but it seems that they will occasionally dig out an old CV.
  • avoid agencies like the plague

unforunately not possible around here, seems to be the only way to get a job...

It's true that sometimes you can't avoid them. All of us in the DWP thread applied directly and ended up dealing with Manpower. In fact, I dealt exclusively with Manpower to the point that their staff conducted my interview.

I finally got a reply from an agency (first time for everything):

"Thank you for sending us a copy of your CV.

We acknowledge your skills and experience but at the moment we do not have any suitable positions available for you.

We will keep your CV on file and if any positions become available we will contact you.

In the meantime best of luck in your employment search."

Well I guess it's nice to be acknowledged for once. No jobs?? Umm what about the one I specifically applied for??

another example of a very poor agency, unfortunately a lot fo them are like that. they are even known to advertise jobs that don't even exist.
    good luck with your search

I'm another one who has found agencies to be really useless.

Which national agencies do people recommend?

To be fair, they said no suitable poistions, so they must feel you were not suitable for the post you applied for, or they had candidates who were more suitable. They didn't say they hadn't any jobs.

National agencies do tend to have the bigger contracts, but some are franchised out.

I would personally recommend looking at your local independant agencies.

  • I suggest applying for part time work and maybe 2 of them as I find agencies useless. I curently have 2 part time jobs one 10 hours the other 2.5 hours a week, am starting a temporary part time job 6 hours a week for 4 weeks on Mondays. As I have aspergers and dyspraxia find full time work too much for me.
