Interview PowerPoint presentation-images, bullet points & things

I have to prepare a presentation for an interview coming up and I'm hearing mixed advice about whether to use bullet points and whether to include images.

Any advice would be hugely welcome.

  • Depends on the presentation. Actually a presentation is something you do, so it is about you communicating effectively, more than it is about bullet points.

Remember, powerpoint is a tool, not a presentation, so unless you are required to use powerpoint, you may not need to. As long as you can hammer the message home.

IMHO, I've presented tens of thousands of Powerpoint slides and always used pictures and bullet points to effect. But as the above poster says, communication is most effective when Powerpoint is used as an aid to your presentation. Simple pictures and your verbal description quickly illustrate a fact. Bullet points are good at headlining statements but dont use to much on one slide, especially if you've timing and transition features in the slides as well. My other tip is to use one clear non-serif font throughout.

and remember, just because you CAN introduce each slide in a different and whizzy way, doesn't mean you should.

Two final thoughts: if you do use lots of images, make sure it's not going to take forever to load each slide. And also make sure that your version of powerpoint is going to work on their equipment! Or take your own laptop, and make sure it will talk to their projector.

  • In interviews you stick to the basic black and white! You do not know if anyone if colour blind!

Bullet points will tidy things up.

Use the least amount of words as possible!

I totally agree with this particularly the last sentence.

I would always take hard copies for those listening too incase the electronic element goes all wrong!
