Managed to sort it, eventually tracked down someone else in the volunteer centre and they have agreed to give me a ref. so handed in my notice on the 15th and now have 2 weeks to work, i am taking the last week as annual leave, so hopefully I will be starting new job on the 12th :j

Just to add my two pennorth - if a company is asked for a reference, they can't say anything bad if its not true, as you can sue them. They may only give the legal minimum, which i think is just dates of employment (someone else feel free to correct me if i'm wrong!) but they are obliged to give the minimum requirement.
