Snacks for new year 7

Hi all

My 11 yr old is coping pretty well with the transition to (big!) secondary school but on some days if her class is late down she's daunted by the queues for lunch and isn't always eating. She's fine really and will conquer the system in due course but I feel I should provide some healthy snacks she could stash in her bag. She often took packed lunch in primary school but doesn't want to default to that as she likes making her own choices when she does get to school lunch. She usually takes an apple and has said she'd like to take a flask of soup when the weather gets cold. But an apple doesn't seem enough for a day that's 2 hours longer than she was used to.

I have also wondered about getting her to eat more breakfast and she does like porridge but we're still adapting to getting her out to an early school bus and she's only managing a slice of toast and marmite at the moment. There is a breakfast club at school but she'd have to go even earlier for that so I don't think it would help with the lunch problem.

Any ideas?

  • how about wee tubs of fruit salad? tescos do small value tubs which would just be a perfect size for snack salad.. maybe give her a pancake or muffin to eat on the way to school? bananas?

    make some flapjacks.
prepare a tortilla wrap then she can have half to keep as a standby if she is late down at lunchtime and if she doesnt eat it she can eat it on the way home or at home.

dried apricots with their iron content and carton of orange or apple is especially good for girls.
Other dried fruits, seeds or nuts are good for snacking on
  • try and get her to have a small bowl of something ie fruit salad/porridge/cereal as well as her toast. if time is a issue get her up 10 or 15 mins earlier. presuming that while she is having the first course you could make the toast/crumpet/toasted muffin?
