I want to crochet a scarf and it will be my first crochet project ever. Ive got a really nice pattern but it says to use mohair. I can't wear mohair and wondered if anyone can suggest a good alternative - something with the same fluffiness?

Can anyone recommend a book for a complete beginner at crochet? Ive seen one on Amazon - the Encyclopedia of Crochet Techniques by Jan Eaton. If anyone can recommend this or a better book I can perhaps look on Ebay too.0

For basic crochet instructions there is quite a good web page here with basic instructions and illustrations

Also check out the handcrafts section at your library.0 -
When I started to crochet I bought this one and found it very easy to follow:

It has very clear instructions and some of the projects are quite nice. It is fairly basoc though so you will probably want to move on once you have mastered the stitches - you can find hundreds of free patterns here:

Happy hooking!!!Oh dear, here we go again.0 -

I made my mum a scarf for Christmas with the Wilkinsons fluffy yarn and it came out really well, very cuddly and snuggly. Would recommend it if acrylic is better for you. I think it was 99p a ball and I used 3 balls for my scarf.
Edit
I just had a look at the Wilkos site and this is it, although the one I bought was multicoloured.
