  • Hi, I have been banking with Barclays for the last 5 months and any payments/direct debits that are due to go out on a monday always show up on the saturday before but with the later date. It is also the same with money going in. My tax credits are paid on a monday but they are always in my account (and available to withdraw) on the saturday.

Previous to Barclays I banked with Natwest for 6 years and it was exactly the same with them.

If you were paid 2 days ago on thursday then the funds should be available to make the payment you requested. Barclays state online when you set up a payment that the funds have to be available one working day before the transfer is due to take place.

I hope that this is of some help to you. If you have the cleared funds available for the payment Barclays should not make any charges to you.

    Thanks, Cheltgirl!

I feel embarrassed now that I may have jumped the gun. Thing is, before I had my lightbulb moment, I didn't pay much attention to my statements. Now I've become obsessive and it's my mission in life to never again pay interest on my current account or credit card!!

I should've read the small print before setting up the arrangement. When it asked me which date I wanted it to leave my account, I took it literally!

This is normal for Barclays online banking at a weekend.

    Normal for other banks too.

  • I wouldnt worry about it. My sister phoned me in a panic about exactly the the same situation not long ago, my advice to her was never to have a payment set up to leave your account on the same day you are paid just incase there is a delay for some reason. Always the day after. Especially if its a monday. :-)

I feel so stupid that I'm tempted to delete the text from this thread. However, I will leave it as it is for any DFW newbies who may not know...

alot of banks (not only barclays) do it- mine even does it on a weekday- so if direct debit due to due to come out on wednesday computer shows it going out on a tuesday.

Don't feel stupid- the question is valid and i totally agree alot of people don't know. this site is all about educating people about financial management. why shouldn't people know if no one has ever told them or more importantly explained it to them properly.
