I want to be an NVQ Assessor.....

Hi,
I'm after some advice.....
I'm a Senior Administrator and have completed NVQ 3 Business Admin, and am halfway through NVQ 3 Management.
I really really want to be an NVQ Assessor, but am finding it really difficult to find a job in which the company would train me to be an assessor.
I've had a look at local colleges which offer the course, and have requested some more info from them, but it's gonna cost around £650, and then I'm not even guaranteed to be able to find a job afterwards.
Does anyone have any advice on what I should do???
Thanks

You can normally only assess a level lower than your qualification so you might have more chance when you've done your level 4.
Have you looked at working with any of your local training associations and do you have any experience of training or working with young people?
There are very few jobs nowadays where there is any guarantee of work after completing your training, even in areas like Nursing and Teaching.0 -
I'm not sure how you'd be able to train as an assessor just at college anyway, unless they have work placements you can go into. When I did my assessor training it was in my workplace, as I had to get 2 candidates through 3 units each to get my award. Where are you going to get your candidates from if the course is college based?
If you're looking at college courses double check very carefully what they are really offering. I have interviewed people who think they have an NVQ because they went to college, when they actually have only completed the knowledge part and haven't done any of the practical stuff so haven't really got the full NVQ at all.
It maybe also depends what field you are in, but my company has just made all the assessors in our area redundant, and my aunt who ran an assessment centre has also been made redundant. Might not be the best time to be making the move. How much call is there for assessors in your speciality?
Sorry I can't be of more help, but unless you can find a company where you can do your own job and also train to be an assessor for them at the same time (which is what I did) you might be a bit stuck. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
You need to work out what's in it for your employer if you want them to pay for you to do this. So, do they put people through NVQs in your field, would it save time and money to have an on-site assessor, would you be able to continue in your current role? If the answers are yes, then there are your arguments. If you're looking a change of role, you may need stronger ones.Signature removed for peace of mind0

Hi,
I am an assessor, I did my training with a training provider who put me through the A1. The NVQs as we know it are currently being phased out and will be replaced with Diplomas with more of a teaching and coaching role for assessors. I would advise doing the PTLS course as well as this will be of more use to you in the changing assessor role.
Hope this helps
