I am trying to clear mhy credit card debt and paying as much as i can every month however i have an expensive gym membership of £59 per month. I really want to cancel this and pay the £59 to my debt but im tied into a years contract which doesnt end until March 2010!
Any ideas as to how i can get out of this? The gym have a reputation for holding customers to their contract!

My gf was unable to cancel her £30 a month with a gym. You signed a contract so you can only request them to cancel it if they allow it.
You might get it on compassionate grounds due to your circumstances, so try ad be nice to them as they dont have it.
You could force a cancellation but they would want the money owed til the end, i.e. October-March (6x£59)Although no trees were harmed during the creation of this post, a large number of electrons were greatly inconvenienced.
There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies0 -
Hi polly - agree with dark convict - its very hard to get out of gym memberships. Providing they are providing the service they said they would you have no grounds to cancel it.
You could try appealing to them, telling them you are in financial difficulty. Or perhaps you could try asking if you could transfer the memebership to someone else (thats if you know anyone else who would want it).A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

Is it Esporta? They typically charge that amount for membership.
If it is Esporta don't forget that they require 3 months notice so make sure you send your cancellation letter via recorded delivery 3 months before it expires otherwise it'll roll over to another 12 month contract (they have a habit of 'losing' cancellation letters)."The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money"0 -
could you see if you can suspend your membership, you will pay a reduced amount but not be able to use the gym0
