Statue barred????
It's not been 6 years, non payment ranging from 6 to 12 months. Maybe a little longer.
Ok, so non payment for that length of time means no matter what your credit file will be tarnished for 6 years so forget the mortgage in the near future...... the late payment markers/defaults etc will cause you horrendous damage, short term and this is why you cannot open a bank account.
You have a couple of choices;
1. Try hiding for 5yrs (aim for statute barred)
2. Pay up but still have the same effect for the next 5 years and be lighter in the pocket!
Have a mooch at the below links which may help you decide your next move - but whatever you do, seek advice asap!

Good for you, I applaud your morals. However you'll end up with the same end result but paying off a debt that could mean the default/late payments remain for longer than 6yrs (say you pay a little for the next year then fall into arrears they may default you meaning 8yrs).... you have to seek advice, obviously but for the same respect paying it back may not be the best thing to do.....

CCCS have a free debt remedy on line tool. You can do this and it will go through your options with you. You can give it a go at anytime and see what it comes back with. You'll need your statements and incomings and outgoings so that you will get the correct advice.
Use the CCCS link that DarkConvict posted.Debt 30k in 2008.:eek::o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free
