Ia it legal to sell fruit etc on your drive-way

Hi

I have bought some vegetables from a farm and my children had an idea for making extra pocket money that they could sell them on my drive. They are not sold by weight just by item.

Is there anything illegal about this because there is someone watching us :mad:and phoning the police everytime they think we have done something naughty.

They would not be making mega bucks.

i dont think the police would be at all interested in your kids supplementing their pocket money this way!!!
but ...................if you live in council or association house beware - neighbour could claim you were running a business and that would be against tenancy agreement.
well done to your kids btw - should i look out for them on dragons den soon? they sound very enterprising!!

Strictly speaking, you would need public liability insurance. It may sound extreme, but the chances of somebody suing you nowadays are pretty high!
    Gone ... or have I?
  • What a miserable thing to do....reporting children for selling fruit to earn some pocket money. You'd think they (the mean-minded adult) would have better things to do.

If you have contents insurance, then you probably already have PLI. This should cover you for selling items from the end of your drive, after all, how many people sell large items outside their own homes?.

If you have a large garden, get the kids to re-invest their profits in daffodil bulbs. Daffs go for about £2.50 a bunch, and once planted, provide a yearly crop.

  • Hmmm, that's an interesting question. We have lots of people in our village selling fruit and veg from their drive and am sure they would not have public liability insurance. We were going to do the same this year but did not have the bumper crop of apples and pears that we usually do.

We are getting an allotment in October though so would love to be able to sell some of our produce :-)

Your premiums may rocket if your insurance company knew what you were doing. For example if someone slips on an orange and breaks a leg then you would need to be covered.
  • When you apply for your house insurance they will ask if you run a business from home, it would depend if they class this as a business or not. If so, and you didnt make them aware your insurance may be invalid. Might be best to ring them and double check
