Then, like my DD1, you may be bowled a googly if one of yours starts having their own ideas....
I think it's good if the child chooses, but usually it's their friends who choose, or the parents, choosing with an eye on what the parents of the friends have chosen! I've seen many round pegs go into square holes in those ways.
Yes, choice is great, if it is a genuine choice and the wishes, aptitude and needs of the child are properly considered. I wonder how many are really free to make that kind of choice though.0 -

Ones choices are limited to what is available/happening at the time I guess.
Having read Micheals responses, seems the location is good for work commute (again a factor in prices) and is where his family is connected (partner, kids mates etc) and, in the end, we just live where...well....we just live and have to deal with things like house prices/school catchments as they are at the time.
I really cannot recall my parents ever having all this angst about us though and I grew up near to where we own our house. OK, we all went to Grammars as they existed in our area until Thatcher abolished them all, but I don't even recall sitting the 11 + or it being some big deal for them.
OH's parents didn't rate education at all...all had to leave asap to go to work to bring £££ into the household. He was more keen than I about education choices for ours.0 -

Sensible offer? Go in @ 10% off but you have to sell yours first to do the deal? May be an idea to do what Davesanve did, sell, bank, rent for 6 months and then hunt as a buyer with no chain.........could get a better deal that way?
Rentings not so bad..I have got used to it..in fact our rental feels more like home to me than our house at the mo...home is where the heart is and all that......gets you to be disciplined with ones stuff too...a good edit of posessions feels nice.0 -

Renting would 'only' cost you around £10k for the year, and as a cash buyer many things become possible, which can wipe that loss out in an instant, and more.
However, like the school thing, no guarantees. Worked for me though.:D0 -
I would love to have the time to de-clutter - I suspect I current place would feel much bigger with a real dose of de-cluttering...
Renting just seem so expensive, 1500 pcm compared to a mortgage currently costing 350 makes it seem like a costly bet on house prices falling. I am also lucky enough to have access to bridging funds if needed so can already bid as a cash buyer.
I don't think 10% off would be considered in St A at the moment, certainly nothing in the catchment area has gone for that sort of money of late.
Anyway I have decided not to take the 8% off offer and instead get the decorating done - in the end even if we don't end up selling we will appreciate it and our current timetable is that we have 5 years to make the move and who knows where the economy (or the catchment rules) will be even in 12 months let alone 60.I think....0 -
Look at this the other way - a good rising market. How much would you then expect to get for yours and how much would you realistically have to pay to buy what you want? Whats the difference in mortgage then?
I would hazard a guess that it is the same as the current situation where your buyer wants to pay less than the asking price and you want to pay less then the asking price on your chosen property.
In the long-term property does increase in price, as all previous recessions have proven. What is important to you is the affordability if things go wrong with your income whenever there is no guarantee of reselling at the price purchased.
Your purchaser wants to pay 8% less - aim at getting your next house also for 8% less (try your luck at 10% or even 20% discount first.
The higher the purchase price, the less people will be in a position to make offers, so if you are going upmarket, there is more chances of higher % discounts for you than there is for your potential purchasers.0 -
