Cooking meat/fish in microwave?

Hi all,

Please can anyone offer any tips on cooking meat/fish in a microwave? I`ve never done this and normally would use use my halogen oven/pressure cooker/pan cook or stir fry etc but I am currently a bit under the weather after an operation and need to avoid lifting/stretching for a few weeks. Plus frankly I don`t feel well enough atm to stand up using or clean any of the above after using them.

I was about to buy in a few frozen ready meals but it struck me that I would probably get better nutrition from cooking my own meat or fish and maybe adding a sachet or two of the little veg packs that you can throw in the m/w.

Does anyone use the microwave for meat/fish and can offer me any cooking tips please? I don`t mind buying a special dish or gadget for doing this if I need to.

Thanks,
Slinky

My microwave rice/vegetable steamer says it can be used for fish.
If you don't have one, you can make up a microwave steamer yourself just by finding anything lidded that goes in the microwave and find another slotted dish that will sit inside that. Put water in bottom so it touches the bottom of the rack (I'd use boiling water), put the slotted/rack on top, fish on that, pop the lid on and microwave it for 2 minutes at first, then just keep checking it; fish microwaves really quickly. Just poke the middle with a fork to see if it's done.

  • Thanks PN, do you cook your fish from frozen or let it thaw first?

I use the clear lidded plastic takeaway meal containers (and yes, they are microvwaveable!) to microwave one or two portions of fish.

It steams in it's own moisture, although you can add a splash of something or some slices of tom or lemon or some herbs. I prefer to add salt after cooking. esp good for salmon and white fish. I prefer to cook from defrosted.

My favourite healthy lunch for one in less than 5 minutes; microwaved salmon fillet with a slice of lemon, few frozen peas or frozen french beans cooked separately on top at the same time, half a tomato ,piece of wholemeal bread and a blob of natural yogurt on the side as a sauce for the fish. YUM!

Don't overcook, it does cook very quickly and it's a very quick, easy, economical mess free way.
  • Cheers, sounds fairly simple...your salmon meal sounds both easy and yummy!
