movie night food

Hello, Thank you for reading, Im looking for some advice please.

Im going to be inviting some friends over for a movie night, there will be 4-6 people.

I need some ideas for reasonably priced food that I can make that will be filling and can be eaten with hands or just a fork or spoon.

My guests are mainly strapping lads who will be hard to fill. I was thinking steak sandwiches and potatoe wedges, but Im not sure this is a good idea as sometimes steak can have fat veins that not everyone wants to eat, and I dont want it to look like I have "cut up" their dinner. Other thought was pizza but was worried this wont fill them up.

Im looking to spend under £25, I dont need to worry about vege or allergies.

Thank you in advance.

I think I'd go with Reverbe's suggestion of Chilli - can serve with rice or pasta (my OH prefers pasta with his) and some garlic bread (either the pizza style or the baguettes). Couple of bags of mixed Tortilla Chips with salsa or sour cream dips.

Are you providing drinks as well or are they bringing that themselves? If you're providing drinks, make sure you get soft drinks (eg lemonade/coca cola) as well - if anybody is 'really thirsty' after spicy/salty food, they are better 'knocking back' soft drinks rather than lager/beer.
  • Pizza is filling! I would do a mix of pizza, wedges, and nachos.

Nachos are easy to make. All you need are a bag or two of plain tortilla chips (Tesco value 23p ones are great!), jar of salsa, cheese, sour cream. Put a ayer tortilla chips on plate, spoon over some salsa, layer chips again, then salsa, then top with grated cheese. Pop in microwave for 2 mins or until cheese has melted. Then dollop some sour cream on it and serve.

You can add topping like chilli, chopped spring onions, jalepenos etc.

There are 'nacho kits' sold in supermarket but they are expensive for what you get.

This is a good idea! I'd also supplement it with a load of popcorn, I thik popping corn is only about £1.50 and it makes a shedload

    I'd say:
    - chilli (£5)
    - garlic bread, I use this one as it's quick/no yeast http://hubpages.com/hub/Easily-Make-Garlic-and-Cheese-Bread-From-Scratch-In-Under-an-Hour (£1)
    - pizza, I'd do 3, one with some chilli beef on the top as I'd have already made chilli (£1.50)
    - potato wedges (£1)
    - plain white rice (basmati) (£0.75)
    - tortilla chips (value bags) (£1)
    - bowl of grated cheddar (£1)

Rough costings, but that's about £7-10 in reality.

Then something sweet, but not sure what!
  • How about fajitas, mixture of chicken and beef, two big pots of each on the table, tortillas, cheese, sour cream and salas, they can help themselves, big dish of wedges to accomoany. If you have a Sainsb locally, grab a few bags of their basics cinema popcorn, it is gorgoues and the bags are huge!

    Have a good night!

How about an ovenful of baked potatoes, a panful of baked beans and a large dishful of grated cheddar cheese? Filling and super-cheap. Can be supplemented by large tub of coleslaw, either home made (very quick to do with food processor) or even a Lidl ready made one, it is very nice too. Bowl of fruit (apples, pears, grapes) for pudding.

Of course if strapping lads insist on meat, could serve a trayful of chicken legs to go with potatoes, just toss in veg. oil, sprinkle with paprika, pepper and salt and bake in oven with potatoes.

    Cheap and healthy!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I'd add a rice pudding for anyone still hungry to fill up on, super cheap and if you're baking potatos you'll already have a hot oven.
