There must be a quicker way ....

... of peeling beetroot!

I made Delia's pickled beetroot and shallots (http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/type-of-dish/vegetarian-food/pickled-beetroot-with-shallots.html), and the recipe said to peel the beetroot as soon as it was cool enough to handle - which I did, but I feel as though I wasted some of it.

What is the best way to peel roasted beetroot?

Thanks :)

As somebody who spent her teenage years working in a factory that packed boiled beetroot. I would say the easiest way to peel them is when they are really hot but wearing rubber gloves! I do as a result have asbesotos fingers.

  • lbt - did you use your fingers or a knife to peel the beetroot? When you boil it, the skins just slide off in your fingers so you don't waste anything. Haven't tried roasting in the skins but I imagine its probably the same.
  • I use exfoliating gloves put on over latex gloves and rub away

if beetroot is cooked the skins just rub off! wear rubber gloves tho unless you like purple hands!

roast beetroot is food of the gods!
  • lbt thanks for the linky to the Delia site. I just went through all 41 pages of her vegetarian recipes and put a load in the favourites folder!

I find it odd though that there were at least 3 recipes on there that actually had meat/fish in it!! Either the link to vegetarian recipes is broken or Delia is confused!

Delia is EXTREMELY confused. Years ago, I subscribed to her online freezer recipe... er... thing that you subscribe to (hope I'm not being too technical for you all here) so that I could have a bit of variety in make-ahead meals. The first two recipes I fancied in the freezer recipe section said "not suitable for home freezing" at the bottom. I emailed them, and they apologized profusely - apparently, they had teams of people who were supposed to check for things like that on the database and just messed it up completely...

    Hi everyone

    Thanks for your tips.

I tried just rubbing the skins off but they weren't coming off too easily so I used a knife to peel a bit back then pulled the rest off with my fingers.

I roasted them but I wonder if I didn't wrap them well enough? I expected them to steam and roast but they seemed to just roast. Perhaps if they are wrapped better next time they will slide off.

I only cooked some of my harvest because I didn't want to ruin it all if I made a mistake but I will try roasting it again (well wrapped). Yesterday I couldn't peel it quick enough - everytime I finished one for my pickled onions one of my kids ate it!!!!! Can't complain at that though can I? :)

    Thanks

PS I love Delia's recipes for anything I haven't made before because they are usually pretty foolproof. I made her seville orange marmalade (first attempt at marmalade) and the recipe was so easy to follow - everyone loved it :)
