Pension Transfer - anyone offer some advice?

Looking for your financial expertise here -

I have had a quote to transfer my previous Council Pension into the Fire Service Pension.

I had 5 years 139 days in the Council Pension fund and used to pay 6% + they paid 6% which equates to a pension as of May 09 (when i left the Council) of £14552.10.

I recently began employment within the Fire Service who have offered me 4 years 170 days which equates to £11875.39 for that pension to be transferred into their pension, I now pay 8.5% and the Fire Service pay approx 14%

I am in a better pension now and my salary will increase to more than I was earning in the Council over the next 30 months so do you think I should accept the transfer ?

it seems like I am losing but over the years will it work out?

If I accept the Fire Service offer and retire at 60 then I will have 37 years pensionable service in the Fire Service. (full pension being 40 years).

If i keep the Council Pension I will have 32 1/2 years Fire Service + 5 3/4 years Council pensionable service

Anyone advise if I should transfer the Council Pension into the Fire Service or leave them both separate

With the figures you have you should be able to work out the pensions in hard cash at current rates for all options. With the fire service you will hopefully progress through the ranks and the council transfer may be worth 4.5 years of chief fire officer pay rather than 5.5 years of lowly council worker pay.

Are you sure about the annual pension figures? The reason I ask is that they seem rather high for just over 5 years membership. Is there some kind of projection of future increases included?


The New Firefighters' Scheme is pretty similar to the current LGPS, pensionwise – final salary, index linked, 1/60th accrual, can convert pension to lump sum based on each £1 of pension providing £12 of lump sum etc..
Bizarrely if you leave the Fire scheme voluntarily before 60, your deferred benefits will be reduced for early payment if paid before 65, but if you leave at 60 or after they can be paid immediately without reduction.
LGPS is more complex re. reductions for early payment, depending on whether the old 85 year rule applies to some or all of your benefits, and whether you have any protections because of your age etc. Out of interest when did you join LGPS and, if it's not a rude question, how old are you?


Whether your final pay in the Fire scheme will be greater than that in the LGPS taking into account wage inflation over RPI increases is probably the main deciding factor.

In my first week, I made about £ / $ / €25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over £ / $ / €1,000.00! In the third week I had over £ / $ / €10,000.00 and it's still growing.

This is now my fourth week and I have made just over £ / $ / €42,000.00 and it's still coming in rapidly. It's certainly worth £ / $ / €5.00, and 5 stamps, I have spent more than that on the lottery!!

Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups with my name at ..1 and if still ONLY 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive £ / $ / €15,625,00!
With an original investment of only £ / $ / €5.00! AMAZING! When your name is no longer on the list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send out another £ / $ / €5.00 to names on the list, putting your name at number 5 again. And start posting again.
