20-50p for paper backs, £1 is the max and thats a rare occasion. Have a look at the carboot sub-forum for more info. Plus theres like £12 entry free so that would mean you would have to sell 24 books at 50p each just to break even.

Are current books selling at these prices?

Thanks for the link. Has anyone had much success at carboot sales

No. People will not pay much at a carboot in my experience. I have tried to sell popular hardback fiction and non-fiction and paperback fiction in excellent condition and have rarely got more than 50p. Even textbooks in excellent condition rarely fetched more than a couple of quid. I think there is just too much competition as so many people sell books at car books. The poshest place I have car-booted is Buckinghamshire, but even they would not pay much. If you live near somewhere that is very wealthy you might be luckier.

Whats the reason behind this? Can they do that?

The official reason is that buyers are fed up with sellers who overcharge on p and p so making it inclusive gives a fairer overall position. For unofficial reasons you would have to read the ebay board here and the main ebay community boards.

As for can they do it, why not ? It is their site. There are already a number of categories where post and packing must be free.

  • Hi, Just to say I've been trying to sell books, new and unused, at a local carboot sale for about 6 weeks now. The trouble is trying to compete with the other stalls' boxes of 5p,10p etc used books.

Somedays I would come away with no sales whatsoever...and somedays I'd come away with many more books than I arrived with...this is down to donations from other stallholders who just can't get rid...

On the upside, carboot sales are a great place for other bargain networking and bargains galore. It's also a place to meet some real eccentric and interesting characters. If you go to your tourist office/council they should be able to supply you with a list of local regular carboot sales/markets.

I bought some text books from a charity shop for 20p each and sold one a few days ago on Play.com for £14, cost £1.20 postage. I bought up all the text books in this particular charity shop, one is on for £19 (cheapest price) but not sold yet. I think you need a good storage facility and a high turnover of books to make decent money. For the books I sell I've found Play.com to be really successful but it does cost you money to transfer to your bank account. I leave mine on Play to pay for Christmas purchases.
