Can Anyone Help With Sea Monkeys??

For the third time we're trying to grow sea monkeys (the first two, rather expensively unsuccessful!). I have rigidly followed the instructions to the letter (as opposed to letting the children do it, so this time it's totally my fault!!) used bottled water, water purifier, leave for 24 hours, stir the eggs and leave for 5 days ..... and we've got ONE!!! Which will no doubt spring a leak in the next day and make it's way to pre-historic heaven. It's now almost not even about the money - it's the principal!!! What am I doing wrong  All help in sea monkey survival greatly appreciated!

I tried these awhile ago for a laugh. Looked like I only had one or two after 10 days but then suddenly my little tank was full of them!! I found the sea monkeys site quite useful, might be worth taking a look.

  • are you keeping the tank out of direct sunlight? if it gets too warm in the water the litttle things boil.

If you have bought the original sea-monkeys there is a garantee with them and if that fails, as long as you have the tank, you can buy spares kits in wollies and on ebay.

I love sea-monkeys, remeber reading about them in import comics as a kid.

I have been very successful with them. Have you been adding the correct amount of water? providing you are leaving the water stand after adding pack number one as you say, the eggs should hatch as soon as they hit the water. they are really tiny, about the size of a full stop for the first few days.

Please stick with them as they are fun and educational for adults as well as kids.

    Good luck with them.

Yes, they're out of direct sunlight but they're not in the dark. I've not had them long enough yet to need more water, and I've just about strained my eyes looking for teeny signs, but as i say, I've only found one! Although I'm quite encouraged that shelly's materialised in week 2! I'll try the sea monkey site for extra tips as well.

    Thanks guys!

Another thought. When I bought mine I bought a super deluxe kit that had a mini magnifying glass with it. See if you can get a magnifying glass and you will most likely see lots more than just one! Mine ended up breeding too.....so had loads in the little tank in the end......

  • This is a familiar story, My friend loves sea monkeys and had wanted them for ages. When she got her first kit, she followed all the instructions on the pack. A week later there was still no sign of anything, so she decided to start all over again.

This time she decided if nothing started to show, she would just leave it even longer. I think it was about 2 weeks into it when she started noticing hundreds of tiny sea monkeys. Tbh i still think she feels terrible that she never gave the first lot the opportunity to grow.

I do remember her main complaint about changing the water in their tank, she always said it was the worst thing trying to change it especially as you end up losing a few just moving them from tank to bowl.

Sea monkeys are just brine shrimp that you can hatch out of dried eggs at home. And I think the poster meant woolies...lol...as in woolworths.
