Ideas about gardening quote..?

I have already posted this on the green fingered board but it really is about hiring than anything to do with gardening tips.
We need a moderate amount of garden clearance done as a one-off job.
Would anyone have any idea about what would be a reasonable quote?
There is a years old growth of thick and tangly ivy over a fence which needs clearing and uprooting if possible, certainly killing. There is also a dark and damp corner of the garden which has gone wild with ground elder and other stuff and this also needs sorting.
My hopeless, best guess is that this might be half a day to a day's work.
I'd be very grateful if anyone has any recent experience with hiring gardeners.

Hi Liz, I think you will need to get a few quotes in, look in the local paper and use a local person. It will depend on the size of the garden. If winter comes, can spring be far behind?
Spring begins on 21st March.0 -
We recently had two very big beds cleared by a proper gardening company - they were completely overgrown with grass and ivy and weeds and we paid £160 for 8 hrs work.
In contrast we had a full garden clearance (small courtyard gdn) done at the old house for £500 - this was ivy, bamboo, shaping, weeding and took 3 lads 4 hours but was done by someone in the small ads in the local paper.
I would go with a proper gardener - they know what to do and fast, and they will have an established hourly rate rather than a finger in the air, biro behind the ear, short whistle of breath quote!!
They are likely to be more effective at removing roots as well, rather than just growth.
Hope that helps.0
