Which banks use which credit reference agencies?

Hello and good morning!

I'll keep my question(s) nice and brief:

Is it possible to find out which credit reference agency a particular bank uses for their credit checks?

The context:

My Equifax credit record is excellent, whereas my experian one is poor (because I'm disputing something with Abbey and they have updated Equifax in my favour, but not experian yet).

I want to apply for a credit card, but believe I'll be declined if the bank uses Equifax but probably not if they use Experian.

Some interesting comparisons:

Equifax: 0 searches on my credit report in the past 6 months
Experian: 3 searches on my credit report in the past 6 months

Equifax: 9 credit accounts (6 settled)
Experian: 10 credit accounts 6 settled)
Neither of these show my Barclays loan

Equifax: 0 late payments on all accounts in the past 12 months
Experian: 3 late payments on all accounts in the past 12 months

  • To the best of my knowledge RBS use Equifax. HBOS use Experian. Unfortunately I don't know about the other banks.

Abbey should have updated both organisations - if you can afford to wait a few weeks, both should be clear then you can choose the card you want rather than second guessing who will use which agency.

Other thing is to apply for the product you want and if you are declined appeal and ask for the decision to be manually underwritten and send them details of the now resolved dispute with Abbey - that should get you through the 'computer says no' problem!

    Good luck

  • Thanks guys - Abbey seem to not want to update my credit reports at all (they've only just updated my record for June) but when I spoke to Equifax I was told that apparently there's no obligation for them to do so at all.

I didn't realise requests could be manually underwritten, so that is very helpful!
  • Yes, the banking code specifies that a decision should not be soley down to a computer , you have a right to have it looked at manualy
