Upset over cake.

My SIL got married last saturday and her day went really well but I'm so upset! My husband and I paid nearly £300 for the wedding cake which was our present to them and nobody got any! After the reception and speeches I asked her if they were going to cut the cake and she said they would do it when the evening "do" was set up. So thats what they did, they cut the cake and had their first dance and then the cake just sat there at the side of the dance floor all night! At the end of the evening she told me she loved the cake and it was just how she wanted it and they would send pieces out in cake boxes. Anyway now its Friday and still nothing and the 2 top layers were sponge so they will be no good now!

Sorry for moaning, all you lovely brides out their please remember your beautiful cakes and enjoy them with your guests. x

  • Aww thanks for that! What a shame noone got some of the sponge. IMO the cake is for cutting and nowadays with people having sponge cake they really do need people to eat them when they are cut. In the past the cake would be sent to people who couldn't make the wedding as a gesture and as it was fruit cake it would survive a lot longer. Also a lot of people are having them instread of a dessert to help cut costs. I recently went to a wedding and the cake was a cupcake one. There was only enough for the day guests and as we had already eaten a huge meal with dessert noone wanted any! There wasn't enough for all the night guests to all have some so there was a mad rush when they arrived to get it out of the way so they didn't feel left out!

I'm sure your sister in law didn't mean for it to not get eaten and it is great to let us brides to take into account that it will go to waste if it doesn't get eaten!

Don't mean to be rude but its a present and they can what the want with it.
  • My friends did the cake cutting just before the meal. The venue then took the cake away and cut it up and served it for dessert (they got a discount on the set meal price by not having the venue's dessert).

We're planning on having a single tier at the top then cupcakes underneath. We'll do the cake cutting photo with the top tier, which we'll take home, and everyone can eat the cupcakes during the evening. :)

H2B told me its traditional to keep the top tier till the first anniversary, but I pointed out that since we'll have sponge it would be have to be frozen and probably wouldn't be so good a year later. These traditions worked better in the good old days of fruitcake.

However, I do agree with pda that it really is up to the bride and groom what they do with the cake. I can understand you thinking it's a waste, and I don't want to spend £300 on cakes for them not to get eaten, but maybe for your SIL it was more about the visual and the cutting tradition.

Ahhh that's a shame! Maybe they did get to scoff it though but just haven't mentioned it?!

We're having ours cut up at the evening as we're not having anything sweet on the buffet (we're having a sweetie table though!).

  • i bought my sisters cake and favours and she didnt even get married she cancelled 5 months before so only lost £150 but never did get a sorry and i'm not mad or upset with her. Weddings are big things and the bride probably didnt think about it too much, you'll have pictures of it and she told you she appriciated it so what is the problem?
