i've just found this superb gaming experience for kids (adults might like to play it with their kids too) called Faunasphere. i've included a wee blurb from the village gamers reveiw ( http://www.villagegamer.net/2009/09/22/enter-the-faunasphere/ ) below:

i played this with my nearly 8 year old yesterday and the first thing she asked for this morning was to play it again! this is wonderfully rich gameplay full of educational opportunities for HE families or those wanting to boost their children's interest in learning.
one really nice thing about the game is that it is online, meaning that it works with both Mac and PC including older versions of both. i highly recommend this game and i commend Big Fish for offering this up free (some aspects are premium but you don't need them to play) :T http://faunasphere.com/
