Cash for Gold and others .....

Hi everyone. Sorry if this article has already been raised in recent weeks, but I've seen many advertisements on TV regarding sending unwanted gold items away and receiving cash for them.
Has anybody had success with this? Who are the credible companies and who are the sharks?
I have a few bits and wondered if it would be worthwhile. One item is my wedding ring from my previous marriage which although I have no need for it, a little part of me is a bit sentimental about it as it makes up my past and I would hate to send it away, only to be sent a cheque for fiver or something silly.
(Borrowing a mate's laptop for the evening so may not have access over the next couple of days, but I will log in to read your replies as soon as).
Thanks
TMD xx
p.s. - If there is a great big thread on this already, then my apologies. Feel free to point me in the right direction
