so near and yet so far....

I was trying to have my first month in 12 years, where I did not go into my over-draft this month (pay day on monday).

Checked my balance today and guess what? Overdrawn by a measly £9.36!

Oh well maybe next month !

I suppose it wasn't too bad considering before January I was running right up to my £1,150 overdraft limit

    Hi Louise,

So so close, but well done for getting there!

I am going for this this month as well, it will be the first time since ooo about 1998 that I will be in credit (0% student overdraft but still, it'll be nice to see the letters CR after my balance). Pay day 25th, current balance £137.77 CR
It's funny as well that now I just look at my balance to see how much money I have left rather than deducting my balance from 1,250.
Simple things please a simple mind...

I just wanted to ask how you've managed to conquer the dreaded overdraft, which as you said was at over £1000 before January, and now less then 6 months on, you're so very close to zero?

My overdraft limit was £1,500 since i left uni in 2001, just before every payday since then i have been almost at the limit.

    I think you've done amazingly well :T

I have to admit i cheated and super balance transfered it onto my virgin card :o

I have an Esaver account alongside my current account and after my DDs go out i transfer most of the money left over to my esaver, then when i spend anything i transfer the amount back into the current account. so i never feel like i have spare money and larger purchases have to be planned properly. i know it's silly but if i know there is more than say £100 left i start thinking about things i 'need'. so i keep it in the esaver earning me more interest, then by next payday i can do my overpayments on my credit card and i haven't gone into my overdraft. This month i'm going to have to use my overpayment money for new exhaust and service on my moped - but i feel ok about as i haven't increased my debt.

Keep going, i'm truely impressed :)

Well done, next month it will be in credit. Ive finally managed to get mine in credit this month from £17000 overdrawn beginning of March and its such a hard won battle that I intend to keep it that way forever. I was paying too much off my debts, money that I did not really have. Could you possibly be doing this in your haste to become DF? I suppose it depends which is the highest interest, your cc or your overdraft.

CAFCGirl - sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I haven't been able to get on the internet for a while.

I basically put together a budget (a strict one) and stuck to it for the first time in my life. I did become a bit obsessive about it I have to admitt!

I only allow £10 a week to spend on food ( I live alone and go to my mam's once a week) I know this isn't much but I still have a full freezer. Although my weekly shopping budget is tecnically £20 - I try and bring it in at £10.

I also leave myself just £10 a week in my pocket for anything I have not budgetted for. Any money left over goes in a treats pot, which I can use for anything I like.

I used to look around the shops and think I'm skint anyway, so I might as well just buy stuff. Now I think I'm starting to not be so skint (well in debt anyway) so I'll keep that money thanks!!

The thing is not spending the odd few quid here and there soon adds up.

Oh, I am fed up now! Ive still got my overdraft and its no-ones fault but mine. But i have really tried this month and its like its made no difference, well, not compared to all of you anyway! Maybe next month i will see a bigger difference because i am more determined now. Well done to you all - i really do mean that:T
