Reclaiming charges whilst under a payment plan

I’m looking for a bit of advice, I currently have a credit card that I defaulted on it back in 2005 when I was made redundant. I did arrange token payments when I lost my job but they placed default against me anyway. I have now been working for a number of years now which allowed me to increase me payemnts and I have almost paid it off (less than £1000 now). I know when I had the card I did miss the odd payment, and was charged £40 for the nice letter telling me such.

As I only have six years to claim my charges back and this is fast approaching should I write to them, and request they refund the charges against my balance or will this just made them demand immediate payment and abandon my repayment plan?
