Happens every time

Well, last month I decided enough was enough & it was time to get out of debt. So, I moved everything to 0% cards & got in a tenant so that I could put all rental money towards clearing the debts (and add in as much as I can from my wages to clear it asap).

Why though, do unexpected things always come up when I decide to tackle my debts. I'm guessing it must happen to everyone but how do you keep going & not just say F it & go back to your old ways?!

I'm going to have to go in for an op within the next 12wks & will need 2-3wks off work. During this time I'll only get SSP so I'm going to have to use all the money I would have put towards repayments, to cover my mortgage etc etc. It's just so frustrating that I had a plan & now it's all going to be delayed.

I also think my roof may be leaking so I'm worrying about costs there as well, although I havent been into the attic yet to have a proper look...

It just seems that every time I decide to deal with things, something comes along & messes it up & I then think what's the point, I'm never going to get out this mess, why bother trying..... How do I get out this frame of mind?!

Oh poor you Jennykins - I do know how you feel. Hope the op goes well and isn't for anything too serious.

I think you just have to tell yourself that if you hadn't started when you did imagine how much worse a position your would have been in. I know it doesn't feel like a lot of comfort but your debts would have been worse.

Will some of the time off be spent time at home recuperating after the op? If so and depending on how 'well' you will be perhaps you can use some of that time for other money saving or money making ideas.

So if money saving you could work through all your insurances, utilities, phones etc to make sure you have the cheapest providers
If money making you could sign up to survey sites or do the 'daily clicks'.
Failing that think of the money you won't be spending instead of all the money you are not earning -so no petrol/travel costs to work, no work lunches, no spending out socialising.

Think of it as a journey with small steps forward and this is just a slight longer detour. The key thing is that you are still on the journey and not going backwards.

  • Keep a journal, I find that very motivational (mine is on a blog, but there are diary threads on here for the easier way!).

As said above, imagine what you would have done if you'd not made the progress you have! You'd have been royally screwed...

Keep the faith and KEEP GOING.

    Hi

Could you ask your mortgage company for a payment holiday while you are on SSP? It will give you a months breathing space.
  • Awh thank you all so much - you've made me feel a lot better about the whole thing! I hadn't thought about how much money I'd save by being stuck indoors - every cloud has a silver lining after all! I think I'll have a look at starting a journal, might be just the thing to keep me on track.

I always viewed getting out of debt as digging my way out of a hole, sometimes the odd shovelful fell back in!LOL.
You could prepare a bit for your convalescence by getting all your christmas cards in ready to write while you're recovering, or plan some small, easy crafts to give a MS presents.
Your roof may have a leak, but at least if you get it sorted now it will prevent greater, more expensive damage later on and you'll know it will be Ok for winter.
Hope the op goes well, speedy recovery.
    Keep yer chin up! bb
