Been told I might want to post on this board for more help with my problem, so here goes.
Hi all, don't know where to go and ask about this (newbie looking for help). My son has received a letter from Intrum Justitia asking for money but it's in Norwegian so we have'nt got a clue what it says. My son went to Norway in April this year with his Uni and broke his thumb, we take it the letter is asking for money for the hospital where he had treatment (hand put in cast and x-rays taken). I emailed the UK part of Intrum Justita to ask for help and they passed it to the Norway branch which replied 'Sorry the letter is in Norwegian, please forward funds into our bank account'. Now we have had another letter with the price doubled with a deadline (I take it's a deadline, we can understand 14 days on the letter) for tomorrow for payment to be made. I have asked for a translated letter and for them to let me know what the charges are for but have had no reply. My son is really worrying about this as he's afraid they will put his name on a bad debtors list. I have'nt got a clue what to do, I asked at the post office and bank if the giro which is attached to letter can be paid through them and have been told no as it's not a british giro bank form. Any help from anyone would be greatfully appreciated. Thanks for listening. worried_mum
The jist of the letter using translation is :
Exceed the payment period with more than 14 days, the costs increase to twice cf. Debt Regulations
this also applies upon entering into any installment plan in the same period, or maturity. It is emphasized that the requirement in this payment request to be paid
in tellegg legal collection will be reviewed, and credit identifying information about you will be collected. Further information on this and specification of requirements can be found Paar back of the letter. If you have any objections in this matter, we request to be informed as soon as possible

Just one thought, Did your son have any travel insurance that he could claim from?
  • We're still waiting for the Uni to give him the info on the travel insurance that they had when they went. His tutor just tells him to pay it himself and to copy everything then pass it to him!

I would have thought that here must be some kind of legal requirment that the letter that was sent to you is in a language that you understand, not much good if it is in Norwegian and has been sent to a UK resident and you don't understand what it says or does that not matter?
  • Update:
Just had an email through with the following:
Sorry again, but this letter had gone out the same day as I send you my first e-mail.

The amount you should pay is NOK 200,- which is a deductable fee for you stay at the Volda hospital. This should be covered by your insurance. Please contact them.

Please ask them to settle the balance to our account

So hopefully now we can get the insurance details from the Uni and see if they will sort it out for us. Thanks all for listening and thankyou fiddiwebb for your help. Fingers crossed that the Uni can supply us with the Travel Insurance details before this gets out of hand. And by the way my son did not stay in hospital so still not to sure what the charge is for!
