We have a loan with RBS which is also our bank
We have written explaining our position and they have been no help at all we cancelled the d/d when we where unable to pay the full amount which they took by inter branch transfer then reinstated the d/d causing bank charges
They have told my husband "read the small print on agreement" and refused to discuss further

They are within their rights to take money you have on your current and other accounts with them to cover your debt. However, they cannot take more than you have (causing charges) and cannot reinstate the direct debit without your consent.
http://www.bacs.co.uk/BPSL/directdebit/generalpublic/faqs/:Q. Can money be collected from my/our account after I have cancelled a Direct Debit Instruction?
A. No. The organisation would have to obtain your authority to reinstate a cancelled instruction.
However, they have no obligations to freeze the interest and you must repay the debt and the interest.0
