Yes- it does stay there for 6 years
Unfortunately it is a hard lesson to learn - I bet you will not let your brother-in-law do that again
However, this kind of case will need a good whole of market adviser, who has regular contacts with their business development managers to see if they would be able to put a good case forward to the underwriters for you.
This way, hopefully, you will still benefit form the best rates available to you.
