How to make Birthday (and other celebration) Cakes!

We've had a lot of threads recently asking for ideas and tips on how to make birthday and other celebration cakes. I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread for them all.

Please post your cake ideas or questions here :D

  • I need some advice on a cake that I am making for a friends daughters' 18th Birthday.

The one she has chosen is 3 tiers stacked on top of each other so that it looks like a stack of presents. There are over 100 people going to the party so she needs quite a large cake! The problem is, as the cakes are large, 14'', 12'' and 10'' I can't see how they can sit on top of each other without falling through. They are sponge cakes with fondant icing so therefore are quite soft and the weight of both 12 and 10'' cakes sitting on top of the bottom one will, I think, be far too much without some sort of support, but what?

Does anyone have any ideas on a solution?
    Thanks
I must stop procrastinating, I must stop procrastinating! promise I'll stop tomorrow OK:D

use dowels to support the boards under the top 2 tiers. it's how wedding cakes are stacked ;)
