Anyone use dropshippers?

Our youngest is off to school in a few months and I'm looking at different options to improve our finances, as he's only going for a few hours a day to start with I'm thinking of setting up an online store using drop shippers to supply the products. I'm only at the very early stages at the moment and trying to get recommendations for suppliers and ideas of what's in vogue at the moment.

So the question is any one here do something similar and is there anybody you'd recommend and who to avoid.

Hubby is a web developer so the technical side of things is not a problem (if he can ever be bothered at least! )

Hi,
Iv'e used atsdistribution in the past and they have never gone wrong with any orders.
I think the big thing with anything selling online is getting the price right! there is so much on ebay and around the web lately that it's a tough market to crack!

Just a silly question, but how does dropshipping work in reallity?.
Would I simply sell an item, then order it from the dropshipper to be delivered direct to my customer?, if so, how do I make sure the suppliers won't run out of the item.?

Thats pretty much it, You sell the item for £20 to your customer, the customer pays you and you then use the money they have paid you to purchase from the supplier at say £15, the £5 profit is already in your pocket.

I suppose you have to have a degree of trust in the supplier (hence the post here ) The supplier will provide you with a stock feed every day

I cant really see how anyone (apart from the dropshipper) makes money with dropshipping.
The idea of buying wholesale is simple economy of scale, which you do not have. If the drop shipping company can trun a profit selling you something for £15, then your competitors can make the exact same profit selling direct to the customer for £15, making you £20 sale and quick £5 profit very hard to make.

I supose you could create your own drop shipping type agreement with suppliers in a certain niche (phone them up and ask if they would deliver items in unbranded packageing for you etc), but i doubt you will find any profit dealing with companies that advertise as dropshippers.

I would love to here from someone who can dispute this, but it all seems a bit dubious to me.

I sort of thought that when I looked into this a while ago. Lad in work uses dropshippers for his ebay stuff, mainly mobile phone accessories, and the main thing is he doesn't need to carry stock or have the money up front. If you have the premises and the cash to buy from a wholesaler then that is definitely the better way to go.
