new vacuum cleaner

My Dyson Animal has just died (horrible noise and smell - won't start again). It was about 2-3 years old I think. Not sure what to buy next because up till then it had been fine, best I've used and I must have used at least a dozen over the years.
A lot of people seem to be recommending the Miele Cat & Dog but I'd really prefer an upright. If I was to risk another Dyson, are the cheaper versions as good? Any other recommendations?
