Finding a salary

Hope someone can help
My partner is an upholsterer and has recently had an interview for a small independant company that he wants to work for that make bespoke furniture.
He is due to hear in the next copule of days if he's been successful and they said to him to think about the salary he wants.
Problem is, it's been so long since he's been a full time salaried upholsterer he doesn't know what the salary scale is. He obviously doesn't want to under price himself but by the same notion, doesn't want to price himself out of the job.
I've seen a couple of salary checker sites but they don't really cover this sort of job - they're all sales, finance etc based.
Anyone know where we can find some info.
Many thanks

Having a look online there doesnt appear to be many advertised jobs to guage salary from.
The ones that are advertised seem to suggest 13k - 18k is the going rate depending on levels of skill and experience.
If I was him I would pitch in at 20k and see what they say. He can always go lower. He should maybe push them for an indication of what they have to play with.0 -
I never had a job where the salary was not known in advance. Maybe I'm wrong, but I was always of the impression that employers who asked what salary you were expecting, were in some way hoping you would say a lower figure than they were actually willing to pay. Probably Anihilator has the right idea. It seems a peculiar arrangement that they should say, that they can't tell you if you have got the job, but want you to come up with a figure for a wage.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
