Insurance and Standing Orders

My lovely new bank account doesn't do direct debits (great huh!) and as a result both my car insurance and pet insurance have been cancelled as neither company offers standing order as a payment option. So now I'm sat at work somewhat stuck unless I take the risk of driving an uninsured car home!! Does anybody know of any insurance companies that will accept standing order as payment?

What bank account is it? Seems strange to me
  • Card one banking. One of those nasty managed bank accounts :( Apparently they will be offering direct debits in the next few months but at the moment they only do standing orders. Just managed to get a policy for my dog with Petplan on standing order but its £24.58 a month as opposed to the £11 a month I was paying before :( Not bothered to insure the cats as i won't be able to afford it. It used to cost me £28 a month before for 1 dog and 2 cats, dread to think what Petplan would charge me for that little lot!!

As for car insurance, rung loads of places so far and none accept standing orders :(

You coold try to wing it for a while with your car insurance.
I had a policy with the AA, but no bank account in my name so they wouldn't let me set up a DD, so I phoned them every month and paid by debit card, just told them I was setting up a new account but didn't have the details yet, I got away with that for about 6 months.

  • That's a clever idea Peachy. Please don't drive your car uninsured Yamaha, risks just aren't worth it. I know an accident etc is probably remote, but it could alter your life disasterously. If you can't sort out something with your motor insurers over thephone, today from work, can you get someone to drive it home for you on the "driving other cars extension" Only third party cover but at least you would have it at home.

PS I mean their driving other cars extension on their own policy - so they will need to have a policy in their own name and be over 25.

Yes I am also angry as I cant get pet insurance either as I told them I get paid every 28 days and it would be easier for me on a standing order, they told me they only do direct debits, it seems like all insurance companies are all the same these days now, it is so blooming annoying, can anyone reccomend an insurance firm that will accept standing orders instead, please let me know :(

Peachprice that is very silly advice to be giving anyone, I should know and your a very lucky lady not too have been caught out, Yamaha please don't ever take advice like that, there is every chance that this will NOT work for you and your taking a very serious risk of an accident were you could be seriously hurt or could end up in prison or worse still your car impounded and being banned from driving and a hefty fine,I am a Lawyer and know what I am talking about so please don't take this risk
  • I am pretty sure that peachyprice does not mean to 'wing it' as to drive uninsured but 'wing it' to speak to her insurers to see if they will accept a one off debit card payment!

OP, have you tried to get a barclays cash card account? I am surprised if they will not open one for you as they even open accounts for undischarged bankrupts! It's a very good account even though it's 'basic' it comes with a debit card and you can set up Direct debits. If you are an undischarged bankrupt they may not allow you to have internet banking but that is much preferable to paying for an account that doesn't even offer the facilities you need!

  • OP, I just noticed in your post that you were discharged in 2010, you should definitely be able to get a basic account somewhere!

I may be wrong, but is the driving other cars third party thing only valid when the car they are driving is insured already? it just allows another person to drive the car on their own policy rather than being added to the car's insurance policy?

Op please don't risk driving your car anywhere without sorting insurance first, most insurance companies will accept a debit card payment and it buys you a month to open a basic account elsewhere.
