I have tried the ones from Boots and found them to be useless. No good for bad snoring.

Have you tried the breathe right strips or similar for your snorer? I use them and they work fairly well. Boots do an own brand which is cheaper but not quite as sticky. They're also good if you're a bit stuffed up, keeps your nostrils open a bit more

The ones in Boots are fairly naff, btw..
The pink cylindrical foam ones aren't too bad but the orange conical foam 'disposable' ones are useless.
  • I work night shifts and also have a young baby in the house. I swear by "bioears" from boots. They come in packs of three for about £5. Unlike most earplugs they are not foam, but remind me of blutack. You push them into your ears and they mould to seal any gaps. You can also sleep on your side without them coming out. Might be worth giving them a go, but as people are saying its horses for courses.
  • Have you tried one of these across the nose??

 Is that normal biker procedure? Don't you worry that you might miss a sound that is important?

    Hi x12yhp,

    Yes this is normal procedure.
Wind noise around about 60mph (don't remember exact figure) will damage your hearing after 5 MINUTES without ear plugs. So most people I know wear them.

I can certainly hear horns and sirens with my ear plugs in.

Have to say though your post does come across a little judgmental about a topic you appear to know nothing about.

But yes, it's very common practice these days and widely know and those that don't wear them are almost certain to experience hearing damage.

It's not engine noise that's the problem (as some people think) it's wind noise.

Are they the 'wax' ones? I was worried that as they are harder than the foam ones they could hurt the eardrum if they got pushed in too far.

The ones that look like Rhubarb and Custard are the ones I have. They say disposable but I just gently rinse them under the tap each morning and leave to dry. I have used about 3 pairs in the past 3 months.
I ordered some of these and I'm afraid they're useless - don't cut out any noise at all. I must have bigger ear-holes or something.

Different ones suit different people's ear cannals.
If you are really keen you can have them made to your own specification.
They aren't ludicrously expensive - about £30 or something for the moulds, which if you have a serious reason could be worthwhile.
Some bikers get this done, because it's a small price for hearing.

Otherwise get a mixed bag off ebay just to try them all.
If you're really skint you could ebay back the ones you don't use.
