if an outstanding debt that has fallen behind and been handed to a debt recover firm,and they are phoning you,can they take any further action if you ignore them,but only listen through voicemail messages,and not in person.

Yes they can take action to recover the debt

They could issue a default against you which will appear and stay on your credit record for 6years. The original creditor may have already done this, they would have sent a default notice to your address (or the last address they have on file for you).

They could issues court proceedings for a county court judgement to be made against you, in this case the court would send blue court papers through to the address the creditor holds for you.

Have you also received letters from the debt collectors in addition to telephone calls?

They are entitled to chase the debt for 6years from the date you last paid (or acknowleged the debt in writing). If they get a CCJ there is no time limit they can chase you for the debt. A CCJ will severly affect your credit record and your ability to get credit.

If you don't pay a CCJ it is possible they could get an attachement of earnings to take the money straight out of your wages (if you are employed).

How much of the above they will do would depend on the amounts involved.
