Serious debate on economic and moral viability of second homes to incest in eleven posts. Surely a record even by our our own high standards?0

Got a long way to go to catch up with the arms though!0

My Dad owns a holiday home in the UK and, until my Mum passed away, they spent 3 or 4 days a week down there as they worked part time.
I know what you mean about the morals of the situation, it is a difficult one. However, they would probably spend more in the local pubs, restaurants and other local shops than a lot of the locals would. I think they were also quite conscious of the fact that they were 'intruders' in some way, so made sure they put back in to the community by attending local events, volunteering, helping out etc.
My Dad's place is situated in an area that isn't awash with holiday homes though, so maybe the effect isn't as bad in that area as it is in others. I've heard stories of villages in Cornwall and Devon half empty in the winter, which must be devastating for local businesses.
This is similar to whatI see here. the weekenders and holiday makers (some second homes, a lot tourism, lots for weddings too) keep a lot of the local shops going. Locals just pop to the supermarket a lot, weekenders love the whole thing of the local organic comminity greengrocers and can be spotted going in in designer sundresses, hunter wellies and huge baskets, which though beautiful are very heavy and so huge they only fit in a humoungous car. They keep a lot of our local ''traditional'' industry going too here.
Graham, does your theroy extend to the hugely expansive flats owned in London and used four weeks a year by overseas elite to base themselves for their London shopping trips?0 -
sorry, but could you clarify, why would there be a big shortage of jobs if less holiday homes = more holiday parks?so lets see
if people just rented a holiday chalet, presumably they would mainly be used in the peak holiday seasons (summmer, school holidays etc)
a bit like holiday homes
so rather than individuals owning holiday homes, instead we would have big business owning lots of chalets
of course we could ban holiday homes and chalets and allow local people to have the properties instead.
probably be a shortage of jobs but no matter they could all live on social security instead.
just a thought .....

Where I lived in Cornwall there were loads of second homes/ holiday places. Lots of young locals were forced to move away. In this particular town, the season for tourism is concentrated on 10 weeks. I think parents put there newly born childs name down for a possible job with Spar when of a working age.0

you have clearly missed the point..maybe too much local inbreeding?
just saying that holiday homes are similar in used to holiday parks i.e. used at peak times ..summer, school holidays etc
so its illogical to swap one for the other
....so either ban both or neither
... you can work out the rest surely0 -

Having a holiday chalet in a holiday park is not taking a home off the streets for someone to buy, to use, as a home.0
