Sorry to hear about your ring.

Before you go in I would give Consumer Advice a call and they will give you good advice. At least you will know where you stand legally.

    Hi,

My fiance had exactly the same problem. She also got platinum ring from lunns and she had the ring 2 months and a dent/scratch appeared. She also works in an office and took very good care of her ring. She brought it back to Lunns and they told her there is nothing they can do as the ring has got a 'good bashing'. She argued that she was very careful with the ring and that there is no way it got any bashing and they held firm and kept saying there is nothing they can do.
  • I don't know about the science of this, and if I am wrong I'm sure someone who knows more will correct me, but when I was getting my engagement ring (many many years ago!) the jeweller warned us that platinum was a softer metal than gold and not so good at standing up to everyday wear and tear.

your correct platinum is indeed a very soft metal and you dont have to hammer it to dent it.my wife damaged hers by helping me to move a freezer.and my own gold ring is worn like a polo mint at the bottom after years of holding a steering wheel and driving.
  • Platinum is 60% heavier than gold. It is denser and stronger..
  • Pure gold is a soft metal, which is why most jewellery is 9 carat (9 parts gold in 24.. ) or 18 carat. Platinum tends to be 18 carat or above, so would be softer than for instance 9 carat gold. It is also less springy, if it dents it stays dented, against gold which can sping back..
  • jj123, I was wondering how you got on in Lunns?
  • thanks everyone for your help lunns took my ring and said they would try to polish the dent out as that was all they could do, they said they cant do anything it is not their fault if i hit it up against something, i argued that this ring was only 2 months old and how can a ring of this money be so easy to damage but again they said it was my fault and not theirs . but they took the ring and when i got it back no dent it had been polished out, so i am very lucky.

Platinum is much softer than you'd think - i've a platinum wedding ring that i've only had a year and there are a world of scratches and tiny dents on it.

I guess its like getting a ding on your new car and expecting the manufacturer to fix it under warranty.

Fair play to Lunns for polishing it out for free
