Rhinoplasty/Nose Job

Heya guys.

I have a rather large nose that has a dorsal hump. OH would love for me to wear my hair in more styles than "down and covering my face" but I just don't have the confidence.
I'm thinking about getting a nose job as my nose has always been in integral part of my hatred of myself. It reminds me of my dad and he's the only person I don't want to see when I look in the mirror. In the past a lot of people have pointed out my unflattering nose.

Does anyone here have any experiences with rhinoplasty? What were the costs like? Were you happy with the results? Any before and after photos?

Please no one tell me that it's what's on the inside that counts and how I should work on accepting myself as I am because I've tried that. I was in therapy for years for that but it didn't help.:o

  • Awwww sorry to hear how unhappy you are. My friend had a nose job (hers was quite large and hooked) everyone said she shouldn't do it...from jealousy maybe, in case she turned out looking amazing..who knows. Anyway, she went through it and it took a while for the swelling to go down (few months) and she looks great. She said its the best thing she has ever done haha. I thought she was beautiful anyway (as are you) but if its something that will improve your life and make you happier than go for it, you only live once. Yes there is a big risk factor, but if your need to do this over takes the risks than just go for it. I think hers cost about 3-4 grand? Its cheaper abroad but i would do A LOT of research before you choose a place. Make sure you have investigated it inside and out, so you find a trusted surgeon.

I don't think it would be right to put up pics of her, but trust me she looks fab :)

  • I havent had it done or know anyone who has however I wanted to give my thoughts.......

It sounds like your really not happy with your nose, never have and no dout never will. I think you should concider getting it done however so lots of research into it and see many before and after photographs.
I am by no means saying my view is if your not happy about something to have surgery however it really does sound like its for you if you have had therapy.

As you say people can turn around and say its whats on the inside etc however its not them with the nose they dont like. If you really dont think you will be happy or confident with yourself then i think... Life is too short to be so unhappy about something which you can change.

What ever you decide I hope that its the right desision for you!

  • How much smaller would you hooter need to be to make you happy?
Who I am is not important. What I do is.
  • I've had rhinoplasty. More than once actually but that was because I suffered a terrible misfortune and had to have the surgery to try and return my appearance to something that approached normal. I can actually walk past people in the street and they don't stare any more. I'm invisible and I love it! So I know pretty much how you feel.

What to do you want to know? Costs can vary enormously depending on who the artist is. And artists they are: it's a very complex skill, partly surgical and partly
aesthetics. I should budget for about £4/5k but it could come to more depending on where the surgeon operates from. A private hospital will be more expensive than having the surgery done privately in an NHS hospital. There are additional costs as well, you will need to pay the anaesthetist separately and also pay for the hospital bed you'll by lying in, eating those peeled grapes.

Was I happy with the results? Eventually, yes very but then I had to have more than one procedure because the work I needed was rather extensive and added to that I understand that surgeons (the good ones) tend to try and do as little as possible rather than too much because it's much more difficult to go back and put back what they've taken away, so I had three.

If you're absolutely determined to have the procedure please DO NOT CONSIDER GOING ABROAD! Even in this country it's possible for anyone with surgical qualifications to carry out plastic surgery without any specialist training or accreditation. Would you want someone who spends their working life on gall-bladders anywhere near your face with a scalpel? This is what happens in some of those clinics which advertise in the women's magazines and I dread to think what happens abroad. I !!!!!! you not.

In the first instance I would ask your GP for a referral to a private plastic surgeon if you don't know anyone who can give you a personal recommendation. They know who the good ones are. I could recommend the surgeon who operated on me privately but that was a long time ago and he may not be practicing any longer.

Before and after photographs? Are you mad! I never had my photograph taken, ever until I had my second procedure on the NHS and I waited a long, long time for that. Decades.

By a dorsal hump, do you mean that the change you want to achieve is to the profile of your nose only or do you need a change to the angle between your upper lip and the tip as well? If its just the profile they will chip some of the bone and this will leave you with spectacularly swollen and black eyes and a plaster-cast going up to your forehead which they will remove after about a fortnight, so you'll probably want to book that time off work. If you also want to change the angle you might need to have packing inside the nostrils and you won't be able to breathe through your nose until it's removed a couple of days later. Having it removed is not fun. They can get miles of gauze up there. More than you ever thought possible.

The results of the surgery become apparent very, very gradually as the swelling goes down. This can take about six months but you will see a difference yourself once the plaster-cast is removed but that will not be the final result.

If there's anything else I can help you with, please just ask. For some of us, this procedure can be a life-changing event but we do need to be realistic about what can be achieved so you need to be guided by your surgeon but also go into your initial consultation with a clear idea in your mind about what you think need and the result you'd like to achieve.
  • Rhinoplasty is a very successful operation, but only with a very reputable qualified plastic surgeon. They should take your 'photo before hand & give you a long detailed consultation about what exactly you are wanting to achieve.

The operation is done under a general anaesthetic & you usually stay overnight.
When you wake up you have a plaster of paris down the bridge of your nose & along your forehead, held down with elasterplast. You are nursed upright to try to avoid bruising, but despite this swollen & bruised eyes are part of the course.

Some people seem to get off quite lightly, but then others will hardly be able to open their eyes at all. Swelling is normal & takes several weeks to settle. Pain is usually minimum just a bit uncomfortable.

You wear the plaster of paris for a while & then at Consultation it is removed & you should be taught some exercises you can do to help reshape the septum of the nose. Another 'photo should be taken again at some stage.

Not sure of the cost sorry, but hope info has helped in some way.

See your GP. The NHS route could be the answer, and you could find out if the surgeon has a private practice, thus ensuring that you avoid the worst of the salesperson/nurse setups.

I do suspect that if your nose reminds you of your father, changing it will make you think your eyes or your hands reminds you instead, but I am sure you are considering that aspect quite seriously in any case.

Oh, and if your avatar is you, I think your nose looks perfect. You're very pretty. But it's your choice.

  • I've not had rhinoplasty, but have had breast augmentation, totally agree with the posters that say don't go abroad.
I chose to pay the extra to have surgery in this country due to the fact that even with the best surgeon things can still go wrong. Its not worth the risk of going abroad imo, you can't just hop on a plane for your aftercare appointment etc.
You sound as if you have really thought it through and it would be of great benefit to you.
I just wanted to look 'normal' as well, the only regret I had is that I didn't have it done years ago.
I also went through the BMI group, I got a loan off them as well to cover the cost of the surgery, you can google them, they give info on what each surgeon specialises in and how long they've been qualified etc.
You do need to pay for your consultation seperately, it was around £100 (4 years ago).
  • Oh and you'll need to see your GP anyway, they need to give you a letter to give to your surgeon saying your ok for surgery, I couldn't even get a consultation without this.
  • You really can't be all that bothered if you've not responded to genuine replies in over a week

It's not that I can't be bothered. It's that I've had a lot on and this thread fell to the bottom of my subscriptions, so because of this it slipped my mind.

I'm seeing my GP about another issue soon so I'll talk to her about maybe getting referred.

Unfortunately, I don't see myself having the money for a nose job quite yet. I also have a wedding to save up for. :rotfl:

I thank everyone for their replies. Things are just hectic here at the moment.
