Cheap as chips and basic. I only need it to do MS Office stuff really - no game playing or picture editing.
Long battery life would be good as would as low a weight as possible. Do Dell do a discount for students?? I know Apple has the educational site but they're pricey and never used Apple products before.
I'm going to set up a network at home so I can work in the kitchen while the kids use the main pc - well i'll get BF to set it up as I'll just blow it up or something -lol
I might consider a 2nd hand one if they're any good - don't want a donkey though
Any ideas??

It would be of use to have a price range. I bought Toshiba Tecra A5 laptop from Insight for about £650 inc vat - it is a centrino and lightweight (weighs 2.2kg) but has no dvd writer (has a cd writer). The lightweight ones tend to be more expensive though. I am a bit wary of Dell - seems too expensive for quality of the product and bundle their very expensive warranty.
For your needs Celeron may be sufficient and Insight has Toshiba satellite pro L20 for £375.99 (only 256 mb memory and no dvd writer and weighs 2.7kg)

You could always try eBay, likely to find one on there much cheaper than in the shops...or have a look at your local ads to see if anyone near by has anything reasonable for sale, they'll usually settle for a cheaper price.
Also Dell do have some good offers on laptops, double memory for free as well....dell.co.uk hopefully that offer is still running! I think their laptops start from £349 and there are usually a few discount codes knocking around this forum, do a bit of research and you should find plenty of options.:beer:Stuff Happens As Wave of Ambiguity Spreads:cool:0 -
I have a Dell 630m and it is a very good laptop. I got it on the outlet store for £400. A real bargin. I was so impressed with it I am getting a Latitude for work as well.
As for the spec you are right, battery life, RAM and weight are far the most important, all new laptops will handle office tasks, so dont listen to people who say you must have a centrino/dvd writer if you are just going to surf the web and write some documnets.

Yeah - I just spotted an inspiron(?) in the outlet for £269, so if it's still there when i get my cheque from ALF I might just get it.
I need it as cheap as poss as I'm getting £500 but I need to get a tumble dryer as well.Noli nothis permittere te terere

If you want to spend sub £220 .... go second hand.
If above £220, go dell.
I wouldnt be spending more than £300 for what you need it for. Dell seem to be doing the bargains brand new at the moment.0 -
Thanks - If I had a button I'd press it;)Noli nothis permittere te terere
